On Saturday, Dec. 7, the McDowell High School Student Council class and DECA chapter hosted their fifth annual Mr. MHS Pageant at East McDowell Middle School. The pageant was a huge success and as of Monday, has raised $20,163.15 for the Gloria Denny, Riley Lowery, and Brantley Taylor families. Each contestant raises at least $200 to compete and their escorts raised at least $50. That money, along with the generous donations of individuals and local businesses, helped make this year’s pageant the most successful one yet.

The Mr. MHS Pageant began five years ago in an effort to help raise funds for families within our school community that have suffered a great loss or are dealing with major medical issues. Families are nominated and voted on by the members of McDowell High School Student Council and the DECA. Families are chosen based on need.

Student Council and DECA Advisor Alison Garrett said, “This year our goal was to raise $15,000. We knew we would have to work extra hard to reach our goal, and I am in awe of the end result. This is a student-centered event and they put so much work into making it happen. From the very start, students help choose the families, choreograph the opening dance, write the script, create the programs, design t-shirts and posters, choose decorations, ask businesses for donations and run the show. This pageant is just proof that when given opportunities, our students will far exceed our expectations.”

This year’s theme was “Mr. MHS: Under Construction.” Contestants competed in two “wears” as well as a talent competition. The wears portion included contestants showing off how they would “construct” their perfect day and what their dream job would be. Talents ranged from live renditions of the “More Cow Bell” SNL skit, a song titled “Things You Don’t Say to Your Wife,” a hilarious magic act, to a beautiful performance of Ed Sheran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” The following contestants won awards in the categories below:

» Mr. MHS: Brad Metcalf

» People’s Choice: Trey Allison

» Mr. Sexy Legs: Seth Baird

» Mr. Money Maker: Tristin Huntsiner (raised over $1,000)

» Family’s Choice: Trey Allison, Matthew Ellis, and Troy Harris

» Mr. Congeniality: Tristin Huntsinger

» Top Five: Grayson Cole, Toby Finn, Troy Harris, Brad Metcalf, Jobie White

The winner of Mr. MHS is voted on by four judges from the school system. This year’s judges were Angie Allison, Seth Hunt, Catriona Young and Thomas Young. The pageant is student directed and run under the supervision of their teacher and advisor, Alison Garrett. This year, Student Body Treasurer Kirstyn Gragg and Student Council member, Emma Vaughn served as the backstage directors. Samantha Dotson, Fabian Bradley, Hope Turner, and Maggie Vaughn acted as stage managers. McDowell High School’s Student Body President and DECA member, Taylor Morgan and Student Council and DECA member, Levi Lister, entertained the audience as the Emcee’s for the evening. The t-shirt design and posters were designed by graphics student Keng Lynhiavu. Students in the MHS Student Council class along with DECA chapter members were in charge of planning the event, although the event itself falls under the duties of the Student Body Treasurer, Kirstyn Gragg.
