A Morganton man was pronounced dead while at his job at Marion Machine on Wednesday.
At 12:42 p.m. Wednesday, the Marion Police Department along with McDowell EMS and McDowell Rescue responded to an industrial accident at Marion Machine, at 169 Machine Shop Road in Marion. The company repairs large heavy equipment for rock crushing and the complex is comprised of four large building and an office over a 10-acre site.
At the time of arrival, McDowell paramedics were attending to an unconscious male victim who was involved in the accident. After several minutes of life-saving efforts the victim succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The victim was later identified as Joshua McGee, 32, of Morganton.
No further information was being released at this time about the incident, police said.
Marion Fire Department and Emergency Management also responded.
The N.C. Department of Labor is investigating. Marion police said on Thursday that once the department determines there is no criminal intent, then the investigation is turned over to the state.
A phone call to McDowell Machine was not returned by deadline.
Amanda James said in a post on The McDowell News Facebook page that McGee was her brother-in-law and asked the community to pray for his wife and two young sons. Many have offered their condolences online.
“Prayers for his family,” wrote Mitchell Randolph. “I worked there years ago, lots of good hard working men have gone through those doors, several of them were family.”
