The old Steak House on the five lane has been demolished and that site will presumably be the new and bigger location for the Dollar General store now at the Marion City Square.

Last week, workers started tearing down the old restaurant building that had stood there since the 1970s. A company called The Broadway Group, LLC from Huntsville, Ala. closed on the property recently for $345,000. This company represents Dollar General, according to officials with the city of Marion.

In no time, work to demolish the building started and the place is pretty much a pile of debris now.

A site plan for a new and bigger Dollar General store has been submitted by the company to the Marion City Hall and it has been approved by city officials. The new store will be located at the site of the old Steak House. In November, the discount store chain got a building permit for a new store there. Dollar General previously received a demolition permit.

But in November of last year, a spokeswoman for the Dollar General Corp. said her company had not yet made a final decision about the site.

Dollar General spokeswoman Angela Petkovic said in November her company was in a due diligence phase for a new Dollar General off North Main Street in Marion. A final decision about whether to build a larger store building there would be made in the summer of this year. But if it happens, the existing store at the Marion City Square shopping square would relocate to the bigger building where the old Steak House once stood.

“This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet,” Petkovic said in November to The McDowell News. “Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this by summer 2020. Feel free to check back periodically for updates.”

Since the demolition work started, The McDowell News has attempted unsuccessfully to reach Dollar General officials about updates.

McDowell County already has nine Dollar General stores. Marion has two stores and Old Fort has one. The communities of Dysartsville, Nebo, North Cove, Pleasant Gardens, Glenwood and Sugar Hill/Montford Cove each have one.
