The new Ingles in Marion opened for business on Wednesday. Officials from the Ingles company, the city of Marion, the McDowell Chamber of Commerce were on hand Wednesday morning to celebrate the opening of the new and much bigger Ingles supermarket. It comes complete with a Starbucks and an Asian food express eatery, along with an expanded bakery and deli section. The store has wider aisles like the others in the chain.
A representative with the Ingles company told The McDowell News that this new and improved store is not yet finished. What is open now is only the first phase of a three-phase store upgrade, he said. A wall on the far left of the new store will be removed to make room for a pharmacy and a walk-in beer cooler area. The old Ingles store will be demolished to make room for those additions and other retail spaces.
In addition, the gas station will be located in the near future along the lower end of the parking lot along West Henderson Street. The plans from Ingles call for charging stations so electric vehicles can be recharged, similar to the ones at the Tailgate Market.
Also, a Zips Car Wash will be located in the area that was previously a vacant lot.
