Seventeen classmates, 14 spouses and six guests attended the Pleasant Gardens High School Class of 1969 50-year reunion at Lake Lure Inn & Spa on Sept. 21.
The weekend was organized by committee members Gary Mills (class president), of Raleigh; Linda Byrd Bivins of Hillsborough; Bill Howell of Greensboro; and Harry Hollifield, Gary Pool and Debbie Hall Street (Miss Pleasant Gardens ’69), all from Marion.
The events began with several classmates playing a round of golf at Apple Valley Golf Course in Rumbling Bald. That evening, classmates and their guests enjoyed dinner at a local Italian restaurant. After dinner, the group gathered in the hotel lobby to reminisce and catch up on old and new times.
Saturday was a busy day with a scheduled boat tour of Lake Lure. The view was breathtaking while cruising the lake with a tour guide. Saturday evening, everyone enjoyed a buffet dinner on the beach, to include a DJ from North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The group played a game of bocce ball and had a bonfire with many chocolate selections for s’mores.
During the dinner, Mills spoke to the guests and shared some trivia throughout the evening. A special tribute was given to our nine former classmates who were not there to be with us. Nine balloons were filled with helium, with a message in each balloon. Each classmate’s name was read as a balloon in their honor was released to indicate they were not forgotten and were definitely missed.
P.G. High School’s Class of ’69 consisted of 47 students who graduated four years before the integration of McDowell High School in 1973.
