Downtown Marion will be a lot sweeter this Saturday with the 2019 Sweet Treats of the Carolinas Festival.
The festival will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is family oriented, spotlighting vendors and their sweet delicious treats. The event is presented by the Kiwanis Club of McDowell County.
Although the festival starts at 10 a.m., you can run off all the calories with the Sweet Treat 5k at the Marion Tailgate Market which starts at 9 a.m.
“Main Street will be filled with the sweetest vendors this side of the Mason-Dixon... and all of your favorite craft and retail vendors,” reads a news release. “There is even a little spice added with The Hot Sauce Guyz!”
At 10:30 a.m., be sure to bring the kids to an Easter egg hunt, located near the bouncy houses. Those finding the golden eggs will win Easter baskets.
Entertainment will be provided by the local youth talent of McDowell County. The McDowell County Kiwanis Talent Show winners will be featured. The McDowell High ROTC will present the colors. Little Miss McDowell Ava Effler will sing the National Anthem and provide other music.
At the Main Stage, The Aboveground Band will perform throughout the day. La Petite Dance Academy and Carolina Dance Company of the Blue Ridge will take the stage.
At the City Stage, Clan Destiny Circus will perform and do workshops throughout the day.
This is an acrobatic theater troupe based out of Asheville, featuring acrobatics, dance, aerials, mime, juggling, flow arts, fire and storytelling. “Clan Destiny Circus is the South’s premiere acrobatic theater troupe and blends classic circus arts with unique acts that have never been seen before,” reads the troupe’s website. “Interactive and innovative Clan Destiny Circus looks forward to sharing our art with you.”
In addition to regular shows, Clan Destiny Circus will also offer workshops throughout the day for both kids and adults.
The brave will want to ride the Mechanical Bull (cost $3-$5). There will be free bounce houses for kids big and small. Beginning at 1 p.m., the kids will love Twist the Balloon Man making balloons.
On the City Stage at 1:30 p.m., there will be the sweetest pageant ever - the Miss Sweet Carolina.
“Be sure to look for the five golden tickets hidden in the wrapper in our sweet treat candy bars,” reads the news release. “Those five tickets will win you a basket stuffed with all kinds of local goodness!”
All proceeds from the Sweet Treat Festival of the Carolinas will go to the McDowell County Schools.
Sweet Treats of the Carolinas Festival is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of McDowell County. The Kiwanis Club is a service organization made up of local, community-minded individuals committed to supporting education for every child in McDowell County. All festival proceeds will support their mission: “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.”
Downtown businesses will be open for all to enjoy and they are getting into the spirit of the Sweet Treats Festival. For example, Mountain Marquee will show the children’s classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” over the weekend. Another example is Mica Town Brewing which will offer pairings of different doughnuts and types of craft beer during the festival. And, The Makery will have door hangers of doughnuts and ice cream cones that folks can paint and create during the day on Saturday.
