Blackbeard’s is under new ownership and McDowell’s only boat dealership will have a big celebration on Saturday.
Located at 2678 Harmony Grove Road off Exit 90 in Nebo, Blackbeard’s was started by Harold Wilson in 1988 and has built an impressive reputation as a leading dealership in boats and watercraft. The business has a prime location along Interstate 40 and also close to Lake James. Recently, it was owned by Larry Miller.
Now, Blackbeard’s has been bought by Skyline Marine. This business, owned by Jeremy Bogard, operates a successful marina on W. Kerr Scott Lake in Wilkesboro as well as being a nationwide leading seller of boat and fishing gear.
“Jeremy is a fine guy and will add the BassCat fiberglass fishing boat line,” read a Facebook post from Larry Miller. “They are truly service minded and will offer some great deals for their customers. I ask everyone to support this business as you have me and the Miller family while we operated this great business.”
Skyline Marine is the fourth leading dealer in the United States for BassCat boats. Bogard along with partner Wayne Spencer are bringing this top quality vessel to Blackbeard’s, according to Mitchell Layell, the sales and marketing manager for Skyline Marine.
“This is a prime location,” he said. “This is the only boat dealership in McDowell County.”
In addition, the location in Nebo, which will be renamed Blackbeard’s by Skyline Marine, will have a new tackle selection featuring Shimano rods and reels, G-Loomis products, Jackall lures, Strike King baits and much more.
Blackbeard’s will have a new selection of fishing and outdoor apparel with products from Huk and Costa sunglasses. You will be able to find new options for boat engines such as motors from Honda and Evinrude, according to Layell.
On Saturday, the new Blackbeard’s by Skyline Marine will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the change in ownership.
The event will have free food and drinks and the managers will introduce a monthly tournament layout sponsored by Shimano. All tackle sales will apply to the entry fee for the monthly tournaments.
And on Saturday, fishing enthusiasts will be able to meet Bassmaster Elite Pro Hank Cherry during the open house.
A resident of Lincolnton, Cherry won the 2013 Elite Series Rookie of the Year award and has competed in four Bassmaster Classics and narrowly lost in 2013. He has two wins to his credit, an Open at Smith Lake and the All-Star event in 2013. Cherry will compete in his seventh year on the Bassmaster Elite Series in 2019, according to an online biography.
Recently, Blackbeard’s was a dealer in campers but on Saturday, there will be a “camper blowout.” Manager Derek Farmer said he will have some excellent deals on those items.
The new owner and his managers want the public to know that Blackbeard’s by Skyline Marine is there to help with all of your fishing needs, whether it is a boat, apparel or gear. They want this place to be a “one-stop shop” for anglers.
“It’s a family atmosphere,” said Layell. “We are here to answer your questions about fishing.”
