Do you have a young scientist itching to stretch their science muscles over summer break? If so, then sign them up for the free Mad Science STEM Camp.

McDowell Technical Community College is partnering with NC BioNetwork to provide a four-day camp jam packed with fun and learning. Campers will be fully engaged with interactive experiments teaching both practical and amazing science lessons. Attend and explore the world of chemical reactions, harness the power of the sun to create tasty treats, unleash the awesomeness of the scientific method and much more.

The camp is free and offered to rising eight-grade students at MTCC from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 15-18. Lunch and snacks will be provided, but transportation is not. The registration deadline is Monday, June 24 at 5 p.m. Space is limited. You can register online at www.mcdowelltech.edu/apps/form/MadScience STEMCampRegistration.

The camp will have one theme for each day.

On Potions Day, campers are introduced to laboratory safety, the scientific method and chemical reactions. Activities include chalk chromatography, decorating backpacks using chromatography, making lava lamps and unknown white powder identification activity.

Power Day will show campers about alternative sources of energy by making solar-powered ovens, human batteries, UV energy and exposure and wind turbines.

Monster Day will emerge campers in the world of anatomy and physiology by seeing what it would take to make and keep a monster alive. Activities include reverse engineering a cardiovascular system, building a model lung, investigating vision and engineering alternative ways to close a bone fracture.

On Spy Day, campers will dive into the secret world of spies. Activities include code breaking and code building, using and identifying invisible inks, making camouflage and working with biometrics.

Campers will spend the day tinkering on Inventions Day. Activities include Rube Goldberg machines, rockets and free maker space time.
