A Marion driver was pronounced dead after his truck ran down an embankment in the Montford Cove area Wednesday evening.
At approximately 7:41 p.m. Wednesday, emergency units and law enforcement responded to 11151 Montford Cove Road after receiving reports of a single-vehicle wreck.
At the arrival of first responders, one patient – identified as 48-year-old William Daniel Faulkner of Marion – was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to First Sgt. Mark Cline of the NC State Highway Patrol, a 2011 Nissan Titan pickup truck, operated by Faulkner, was traveling southbound on Montford Cove Road when it ran off the right side of the road, lost control off the shoulder and traveled down an embankment. The vehicle then ran across a small creek and struck the bank on the opposite side of the creek head-on.
Cline said that the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and that excessive speed played a factor. Alcohol or impairment was not a suspected factor, while a toxicology report remains pending. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
Sugar Hill-Montford Cove Fire Department, McDowell EMS, McDowell Rescue Squad, McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and NCSHP responded to the incident, according to EMS Deputy Director Adrienne Jones.
