The tractor trailer was hauling mulch when it overturned into the guardrail on I-40.

On Friday, troopers said a Salisbury man who lost control of his tractor trailer on I-40 said he had equipment malfunctions before the wreck.

Tuesday morning, multiple emergency crews responded to the 78 mile marker of I-40 westbound after a tractor trailer crashed into the guard rail and caught fire. The driver of the vehicle, Richard Justin Wayne, 39, of Salisbury was pulled from the burning cab by two people who witnessed the accident. Wayne was transported to Mission Hospital McDowell with non-life threatening injuries.

“The driver claimed that he had an equipment failure with his steering,” First Sgt. Mark Cline of the NC Highway Patrol. “We can neither confirm nor deny that because the truck was burnt up.”

No criminal charges are pending.

Traffic on I-40 was delayed for over 24 hours while crews worked to clean up debris from the crash and replace the median.
