The filing period for the 2020 elections is already under way.
The filing period started at noon Monday and will continue until Friday, Dec. 20 at noon. Candidates can file to run for office at the McDowell County Board of Elections at 2458 N.C. 226 South in Marion.
In McDowell County, the offices that will be up election are two seats on the McDowell County Board of Commissioners. Republican Commissioners Lynn Greene and Barry McPeters hold those seats.
Another office to be decided is the Register of Deeds. Republican Tonia Hampton holds this position.
Some seats on the non-partisan McDowell Board of Education are also up for election. They are three Marion seats which are now held by incumbents Chad Marsh, Doug McCraw and Amy Moomaw. Another seat on the board up for election is the North Cove seat and it is held by Terry English. The Old Fort seat will be on the ballot and it is held by Patrick Ellis, according to information from the McDowell County Board of Elections.
The 85th District seat in the N.C. House is up for election this year. It is now held by Republican Rep. Josh Dobson but he is instead running for state commissioner of Labor.
The 47th District seat in the N.C. Senate will also be contested. Republican Sen. Ralph Hise holds this seat.
The filing fees are $145.98 to run for commissioner, $465.18 to run for Register of Deeds, $5 to run for Board of Education and $207 to run for N.C. House and N.C. Senate, according to information from the McDowell County Board of Elections.
