Four students from McDowell made the 90-plus Western NC All-District Band (from left): Channing Wellman, a senior at McDowell High School who plays the mallets; Caroline Lanier, an eighth grader at West Middle who plays the French horn; Ryan Holland, a seventh grader at East Middle who plays the clarinet; and Grant Widmann, a 10th grader at MHS who plays tenor sax.

They each had to audition in January to earn a place in the band. Their audition consisted of memorized scales, a solo and sight reading.

Guest clinicians are chosen for each of the four ensembles (11-12, 9-10 and two 6-8 bands) from the finest band directors the country has to offer. Students making the ensemble participate in a two-day clinic on the campus of Western Carolina University, with the final performance given in the state of the art John W.
