Eastfield fifth-graders recently completed their weeks-long study of Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) taught by School Resource Officer Mike Hensley.
On Friday, Dec. 15, students, staff, parents, officers, Superintendent Mark Garrett and Police Chief Allen Lawrence gathered at Eastfield Global Magnet School to watch students graduate from the program and offer words of encouragement.
“These are resources you can use from this day moving forward. Take the lesson to educate yourself and give yourself confidence to make good decisions,” said Garrett. “Habits are being formed right now you will have for the rest of your life.”
He challenged the adults in the audience to nurture their children in the years to come, and told students he was very proud of them.
SRO Hensley said he will always be a resource for the students, even past elementary school.
“I will always be here for you in middle school and high school,” he said.
Winners from the DARE essay contest were announced, and the students read their essay aloud during the presentation. They also received a book bag and a medal. Cassandra Kagan and Andres Bustos were declared winners of the contest.
A reception sponsored by Mr. Bob’s Donuts was held after the graduation.
