A Marion man leading a motorcycle chase from Rutherford County into McDowell was sent to the trauma center after he wrecked in Dysartsville, according to reports.

At approximately 2:09 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, emergency units and law enforcement responded to Pierce Road near Landis Lane in Nebo after receiving reports of a motorcycle wreck from an out-of-county chase.

According to an accident report from the NC State Highway Patrol, Derrick Edward Forney of Marion had been pursued by Rutherford County deputies while operating a Suzuki motorcycle, bringing the chase into McDowell and onto Pierce Road. As the pursuit continued to a high rate of speed, the motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and into several fence posts and a gate, throwing him from the bike.

Estimated damage between the motorcycle and the fence property was listed at $7,500.

Forney was transported to Mission Trauma Center with serious injuries, according to Emergency Services Director William Kehler. He was subsequently cited by local state troopers with careless and reckless driving. Information about any additional charges as a result of the chase were not available Friday afternoon.
