This Friday evening, folks in downtown Marion will smell the aroma of liver mush sandwiches and hear the sounds of some good music.
Marion’s Ninth Annual Liver Mush Festival will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. The annual event celebrates liver mush and the liver mush heritage of Marion and McDowell County.
A new feature for this year’s event is the Pig Calling Contest. Folks are encouraged to get their best pig call ready and prizes will be given to the best pig caller.
There will also be a mechanical bull to ride, which should go well with a belly full of liver mush.
Returning for the third year will be Liver Mush Eating Contest. It’s open to adults 18 years and older. There is a $5 entry fee to compete. Entry will be limited to the first 10 contestants. All contestants must be registered and checked in at the information booth by 7 p.m. on Friday. No preregistration accepted.
Each contestant will be given 10 liver mush sandwiches to eat in five minutes. The first to eat all 10 sandwiches or the most sandwiches in five minutes wins the contest. A $50 cash prize and a Liver Mush Festival T-shirt will be given to the winner.
Folks are asked to share their love of liver mush with a costume or poem. Inflatables and other activities will be available for the kids.
And of course, free liver mush sandwiches will be provided by Hunter’s Liver Mush, the event sponsor.
Hunter’s Liver Mush has been made here in Marion since 1955 and has become the favored brand of liver mush for many folks in western North Carolina.
“And what would a Liver Mush Festival be without the sounds of the sounds of great country music and rock classics by Roadrunnerz,” festival organizers said in a news release. “The Roadrunnerz are a crowd pleasing, high energy band that is sure to get you out of your seat. Formed four years ago, they are already well known for playing a wide variety of music from your favorite top 40country and pop dance tunes, to country and rock classics.”
Sponsors are the city of Marion, Hunter's Liver Mush, Cheerwine, Aaron's, US Cellular, Premier Insurance, Spencer's Hardware, Catawba Valley Staffing and Mountain Ridge Health & Rehab.
