Shirley Ann Dayton Peek, 82, of Morganton, and originally from Spruce Pine, died peacefully Sunday, June 16, 2019, at the residence of her daughter.
Born in Spruce Pine, May 24, 1937, she was the daughter of the late McCoy and Elizabeth Stamey. She was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family very much and her greatest enjoyment was spending time with them. She was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and always helped with Vacation Bible School, and for the last 12 years was a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Morganton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Shular Dayton, and husband of two years, Gabe Peek; brothers, Lewis Stamey, Lindsey Stamey, Charles Stamey, and McArthur Stamey; sisters, Lucille Pittman, Dorothy Autry, Ruby Bently, Anis Thompson, Mary Stamey; and five infant siblings. Surviving are her sons, Jerry Dayton and wife, Jackie, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Johnny Dayton and wife, Carol, of Marion; a daughter, Beth Burleson and husband, David, of Morganton; sisters, Barbara Ward of Spruce Pine and Faye King of Kernersville; six grandchildren, Jeremy (and wife, Tammy) Dayton of Marion, Julie (and husband, Kelvin) Phillips of Morganton, Jillian (and husband, Adam) Maney of Morganton, Joy Dayton of Fort Mill, S.C., Heather (and husband, Ryan) Thorpe of Raleigh and Shannon (and husband, Andrew) Wilkins of Raleigh; and seven great-grandchildren, Andrew and Josie Phillips of Morganton, Abby and Chaya Dayton of Marion, Greyson Maney of Morganton and Charlotte and Hayden Thorpe of Raleigh; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Dr. Dewey Thomas and the Rev. Keith Burkhart officiating.
A graveside service will follow at Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Spruce Pine at 2 p.m.
