A new farmers’ market offering fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other edible products will open for the summer at Mountain Gateway Museum (MGM) in Old Fort, beginning Thursday, May 2.
Organized by the museum in conjunction with Stock Wild Kitchen and the Old Fort Community Forum, with generous support from Silver’s Specialties, TAG Contracting Inc., and Greybeard Realty, the MGM Farmers’ Market will be held every Thursday from 2:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 3 on the museum’s grounds at 24 Water Street in Old Fort, according to a news release.
All spaces at the new market will be free for local farmers, although donations will be accepted. Farmers may sell from their tailgates or from under tents, which they must provide, along with tables and chairs.
Tailgate spaces will be available in the museum’s parking lot on Water Street, and 12-foot by 12-foot tent spaces will be laid out inside the split-rail fence along Water Street in front of the museum’s log cabins.
Farmers must register with the museum to participate. Spaces will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration forms are available on the museum’s website at www.mgmnc.org and at the museum.
Only fresh, locally grown or produced fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants, meats, eggs, honey, and other edibles will be allowed. No craft items will be allowed during the market’s first year, according to the news release.
