Judge Robert K. Martelle will be sworn-in as Chief Judge of McDowell and Rutherford counties today, replacing former Chief Judge Randy Pool who retired suddenly on Nov. 8, and who is now named the victim in an extortion case.

The ceremony will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Rutherford County Courthouse. Martelle’s appointment was effective Nov. 9 following the retirement of Pool. District 29A covers Rutherford and McDowell counties.

Martelle was appointed to the court by Governor Pat McCrory on February 27, 2013, and was re-elected in 2014.

The event is open to the public.
