Passion Project 2.jpg

Destiny Hutchins hopes her passion project will bring awareness to homeless animals in McDowell County.

Destiny Hutchins, a sophomore at McDowell Academy of Innovation, decided to make her passion project all about helping animals.

Through December, Hutchins volunteers every Saturday at Rusty’s Legacy, a rescue shelter where dogs are saved from high-kill shelters. She helps with fostering and adopting out animals. She also tells people interested in adoption a little about the dog’s personality so that potential owners can find out if they would be a good match for the dog.

Hutchins hopes to organize a fundraiser in the future. When asked what inspired her to start this project she said, “I feel like there’s an excess amount of homeless animals, and I feel like this project could change that.”

Through this program, Hutchins’ compassion for animals is being put into action and is helping make a difference in dogs’ and their owners’ lives today.
