A Newland man was arrested and charged after deputies responding to potential drug activity located nearly a pound of meth in his car, authorities said Wednesday.

Deputy Steven McPeters of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Jonathan Paul Church, 46, address listed as Millers Gap Highway in Newland, with trafficking in methamphetamine.

At 7:14 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, McPeters responded to Stacy Hill Road in reference to possible drug activity.

When he arrived, Church was leaving the area in a Subaru. He stopped the car, talked to the driver and a search by deputies and K-9 Kessy turned up 405 grams (or approx. 14.3 oz) of meth.

Church’s bond was set at $100,000.
