Report: Pair stole safe containing money, gun

A Bakersville man and Marion woman face theft charges after allegedly stealing a safe containing money and a handgun from one of the suspect’s father, authorities said Wednesday.

Capt. Shanon Smith of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 27-year-old Wesley Garrett Buchanan, address listed as Bakersville, and 33-year-old Jeanna Elizabeth Washburn, address listed as EP Boyd Drive in Marion, both with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny of a firearm and safecracking.

On Wednesday, May 29, Joe Washburn Sr., of U.S. 221 North in Marion, reported that someone entered his residence and stole a safe containing an undisclosed amount of currency and a 9mm handgun.

An investigation led to Jeanna Washburn, who is the daughter of the victim, and Buchanan.

Some of the property was recovered.

Bonds for Buchanan and Jeanna Washburn were each set for $40,000.
