An Old Fort man registered as a sex offender was charged after allegedly assaulting deputies – including charging at one detective with scissors – during a residence check, authorities said Thursday.
Detective Walt Thrower of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged David Lee Dehart, 56, address listed as Branson Creek Drive in Old Fort, with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.
Deputy Bob Green of the Sheriff’s Office also charged Dehart with assault on a government official or employee, communicating threats and resisting a public officer.
On the afternoon of Thursday, July 11, Thrower was conducting a random sex offender residence check at the Branson Creek Drive home of Dehart, who is a registered sex offender.
The suspect became irate, pushed Thrower off the porch and, once the detective was back in his patrol car, came at him with a pair of scissors.
Multiple deputies then responded to the scene and helped take Dehart into custody, where he is currently being held without bond.
According to the NC Sex Offender registry, Dehart was convicted in the state of Oregon in 1992 on one count each of sexual abuse in the first degree and rape in the first degree and registered as an out-of-stage conviction.
