Report: Subject struck by a train Friday night in Marion

McDowell Emergency Services said one person was struck by a train Friday night, and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

According to reports, the incident occurred at 10:32 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16 on the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Carolina Avenue in Marion. 

EMS said Norfolk Southern requested assistance and police after a subject was struck by a train. Initial reports indicated that the individual was lying on the tracks as the train approached. Paramedics transported one patient suffering from life-threatening injuries to a nearby landing zone, where MAMA airlifted the patient to Mission Trauma Center in Asheville. 

McDowell EMS along with the Marion Fire Department and McDowell Rescue Squad responded to the scene. The incident is under investigation, and the person's identity has not been released.
