Former Avery High football coach Darrell Brewer has been named the new head coach of the McDowell Titans.

Brewer takes over for Andy Morgan, who stepped down May 17 after going 11-24 in three years at the helm. Brewer’s hiring was confirmed by the McDowell County Board of Education at Monday’s meeting.

Brewer was head coach at Avery from 2004-2015, and compiled a 68-71 record during that span. He led the Vikings to the State 1A Playoffs each year, and Avery advanced to the third round twice.

In 2005, Brewer’s Vikings went 11-3, won the Western Highlands Conference championship and set a school record for wins in a season. He was a Shrine Bowl assistant in 2014 and was also an assistant in the East-West All-Star Game.

The Titans were 4-8 last year and advanced to the State 4A Playoffs. McDowell has only two winning seasons in the last 18 years.
