RANDLEMAN — A Kernersville man is facing charges Friday after his 5-year-old son shot himself in the face with a handgun in a Wendy's parking lot.

Randy Christopher Brower, 26, of 275 Forrest Acres Drive, is charged with negligent child abuse causing bodily injury and failure to store firearm to protect a minor, Randleman Police Department said in a news release.

His son remains in critical condition, police said.

Police said the shooting happened on Sunday at 1029 High Point St. when the boy unbuckled his booster seat and grabbed a .45 semi-automatic handgun out of the seat pocket and fired the gun.

The gun went off just as his mother tried to order food in the drive-thru, police said.

Investigators said the father told them he had placed the gun in the seat pocket while vacuuming and forgot to remove it.

Bail information was not immediately available.
