Tractor-trailer crash closes I-40 near Old Fort

Another wreck has occurred at the westbound entrance ramp at Sugar Hill Road. Emergency units are on the scene.


At 9:30, McDowell County Emergency Management said I-40 eastbound was open but urged motorists to use extra caution.


A tractor-trailer truck hauling mulch overturned and caught fire on I-40 near Old Fort just after 9 a.m., according to emergency radio traffic. A second truck may have been involved in the crash.

I-40 was closed in both directions at 9:16 a.m. The driver escaped the burning vehicle, according radio traffic. The fire was brought under control at 9:19 a.m.
