A Marion man has been identified as the person hit by a train over the weekend.

At 10:32 p.m. Friday night, emergency agencies and law enforcement responded to the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Carolina Avenue after receiving reports of a person struck by a train.

Initial reports indicated that the individual, now identified as 29-year-old Jesse James Ward of Opossum Drive in Marion, was lying on the tracks as the train approached.

According to Capt. Shanon Smith of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, events leading up to incident are still under investigation; however alcohol has been deemed a suspected factor.

Ward was airlifted via MAMA helicopter to Mission Trauma Center in Asheville with life threatening injuries. By Monday afternoon’s update by authorities, Ward was still listed under critical condition.
