A student from West McDowell Middle was selected to perform with the NC Middle School All-State Band at UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, May 5.

Caroline Lanier plays French horn, and is an eighth grader at West McDowell Middle School. This is the second time Lanier has made the all-state band while at West Middle.

The process to be selected for all-state band involves two rounds of auditions. She auditioned in January for NC Western District band and placed first chair for the middle school band.

There are six districts across the state, and each sends the top players in each section to audition for the all-state band in March. Lanier competed against 16 other middle school French horn players from across the state, and earned fourth chair in the Middle School All-State Band.

This year the band was under the direction of composer Michael Sweeney. He is the Director of Band Publications for Hal Leonard. Sweeney is a prolific composer of band music, and has over 500 published compositions and arrangements. The students performed many of Sweeney’s pieces at the concert and even premiered his latest piece “Sleepsong”.
