Wind advisory in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday

McDowell County Emergency Management states a wind advisory for McDowell and other nearby counties will be in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected from noon Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

The advisory is in effect for Avery, Yancey, Mitchell, Caldwell mountains, greater Caldwell, Burke mountains, greater Burke, McDowell mountains and eastern McDowell, according to a news release.

The impacts include gusty winds that could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. The strongest wind gusts are expected to occur at elevations above 3,500 feet, and in particular the ridgetops and mountain peaks, late Wednesday afternoon and early Wednesday night.

Residents of this region are urged to use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. You should secure outdoor objects, according to the news release.
