RUTHERFORD COLLEGE Bettie Bowman Carswell of Rutherford College, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, in her home following a period of declining health. Born in Caldwell County, Nov. 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Henry Milton Bowman and Mary Elizabeth McLean Bowman. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Rutherford College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey W. Carswell; two brothers, Jack and Joe Bowman; two sisters, Ruth Benfield and Allie Abernathy; and a daughter, Anne Goins. Mrs. Carswell is survived by her children, Teresa Dale (Robin) of Morganton; Mary Lee Carswell of Connelly Springs; a son, James Carswell of Morganton; son-in-law, Michael Goins; five grandchildren, Amy Eckard, Gena Brienzi, Steven Goins, Lana Bowman, and Alexis Dale; and four great- grandchildren, Keith Cook, Peyton Eckard, Caramia Eckard and Connor Brienzi. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at Burke Memorial Park, with Earl Berry Jr. officiating. The family greeted friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 130, Rutherford College, NC 28671; or to the Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care for their "at home" care. They also wish to extend a special thanks to Dale Icard and Reba Barnes.
