Nancy Camden Rollins Ernst, 87, formerly of La Plata, Md., passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at at Rose Hill Retirement Community in Marion.

She was born in Asheville, Sept. 23, 1931, to the late Thomas Scott Rollins Jr., of Asheville, and Ellen Melick Rollins, of Elizabeth City. Nancy loved North Carolina and lived in Asheville, Chapel Hill, Elizabeth City, Hendersonville, Black Mountain and Marion. After she graduated from High School in Elizabeth City, Nancy was enrolled in the Fassifern School in Hendersonville, until she was graduated in 1951. She worked for the Federal Government with the U.S. General Accounting Office her entire career, initially with the Office of Investigations and then later with the Office of the Comptroller General. Nancy retired Dec. 31, 1993, following 42 years of distinguished service. She received the GAO's Meritorious Service Award in addition to other awards and citations. Nancy and her husband, Robert Sankey Ernst, who preceded her in death, lived in La Plata, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C., where they attended Christ Church, Port Tobacco Parish. Deeply involved in their church and community, they were always first to volunteer to take friends to medical appointments, delivered Meals on Wheels or simply care for their neighbors and pets.

She is survived by her niece and nephews and their families, Jim and Elizabeth Gibbs of Marion, Richard and Vickie Herman of Brandon, Fla., and Dan and Susan Herman of Seminole, Fla.; as well as many great-nieces and nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Services of remembrance will be held at a later time in Florida and Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills at P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff at Rose Hill Retirement Community, for the excellent care given to Nancy during her time there. They also want to thank the staff of New Horizon Home Care for their loving support of Nancy.
