Mrs. Mary Ballew Gowan, 84, of the Pleasant Gardens community, passed away at her home Friday, Sept. 27, 2019.

Mary was born in McDowell County April 28, 1935, to the late Steven LaFayette "Fate" Ballew and Martha Stroud Ballew. After she graduated from High School, she attended Montreat Junior College for two years. She then transferred to Winthrop College from which she graduated with an Education Degree. Mary taught at Old Fort Elementary School for over 20 years. She also assisted her late husband, John M. Gowan, who passed away in 2006, with the management and operation of the family business, Triple C Campground on Buck Creek. Her family knew her as encouraging and strong, and always faithful to those she loved. Her favorite saying, "Thank the Lord and praise the Lord" exemplified how she lived her life and it will be long remembered by the family she leaves behind. She loved her family, and especially her grandchildren, more than life itself and they always knew it. Two sisters; and a brother, preceded her in death.

Mary leaves behind three sons, Carson Gowan and wife, Jeanna, Charles Gowan and wife, Pat, and Clay Gowan and wife, Wendy, all of Marion; her brother, Jonas Ballew of Taylor, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Patsy Ballew of Marion; nine grandchildren, Erika, John Carson, Fate, Haley, Mary Katherine, Gwen, Camryn, Joseph, and Elizabeth; and a great-granddaughter, Gracie.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Jerry Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved John.

Flowers are acceptable and appreciated. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in her memory are encouraged to consider the CarePartners Hospice McDowell "You Are Special" fund at 575 Airport Rd., Marion, NC 28752.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at Westmoreland Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for the Gowan family.
