Mr. William "Bill" Ray Lewis Sr., 92, of Marion, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at Universal Healthcare in Fletcher following several years of declining health.

Bill was born April 5, 1927, to the late Lucille Lewis, and lived his entire life in McDowell County. He was a building contractor and built many homes over the years. He was a faithful member of Burkemont Baptist Church and served his Lord there as a Deacon, a teacher in the Adult Men's Sunday School Class, a member of the choir and as a Youth Leader. He loved hunting and fishing but spending time with his children and grandchildren was his favorite pastime.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Lee McGee Lewis; his second wife, Ernestine Daniels Lewis; a son, Rex Everett Lewis; and two grandsons, Robert David Shelton and Jeffrey S. Nelson. The memory of him will be held dear by three children, Laura L. Powell of Fletcher, William "Billy" R. Lewis Jr. of Morganton and Brian Kevin Lewis of Raleigh; a stepdaughter Cindy Collins Smathers and her daughter, Shannon Quinn; three grandchildren, Andrea Powell Wade, Adam Keith Nelson and Christy Powell Queen; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Shelton; a grandson due in three weeks; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A time of remembrance and celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Jerry Burnett officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service. His remains will be laid to rest beside his beloved Ernestine in Oak Grove Cemetery.
