Janice Freeman Patterson was born May 3, 1934, to parents John and Sue Proctor Freeman (now deceased) in Lake Lure.

Janice was the baby of the Freeman household and was preceded in death by 19 siblings. She was one of two remaining siblings until we lost her to the enemy death Friday, Nov. 29, 2019. Janice was at Oak Grove Healthcare Center in Rutherfordton when she passed.

In addition to the skilled care from the staff of Oak Grove and Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, particularly Amanda Ray, she also received loving care and dedicated attention from her niece and nephew, Velma Waters and Dale Logan, whom she was very close.

Janice was educated in North Carolina, completing her education with a BS degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. After university she was employed at first as a teacher, then as a social worker. In 1956 she moved to New York City where she met and married Joseph Patterson in Dec. 1970. Janice retired as an instructor with the Bergen County (New Jersey) School System and also worked for a number of companies in New York City as a Financial Manager. When they retired early in 2000, they moved to Marion. Janice lost Joe in Feb. 2012, but continued to reside in their home until Oct. 7, 2019.

She is survived by one sibling, Dr. Stephen Paul Freeman; many nieces and nephews; and a stepdaughter, Janice Patterson who will all miss her greatly.

A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will take place Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Bro. Joe Frohbose officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the Patterson family.
