Alan Paige Stewart, 79 years old, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; their three sons; and eight grandchildren. Born to Jack and Mildred Stewart, he was raised in Union, N.J. He graduated from Western Maryland College, married his college sweetheart and entered the Army as a second lieutenant. He served in the military for 27 years and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He then worked in the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association until full retirement. In 2000, he and Nancy moved to Nebo where they built a house on Lake James in hopes their family would visit often which they did.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8, at First United Methodist Church, 176 Robert St. in Marion, with the Pastor Warren Owens officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials to be made to Care Partners Hospice and Palliative Care McDowell, 575 Airport Rd., Marion, NC 28752. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at the McDowell Hospice who cared so compassionately for Al for the past six months.
