Frances Loretta Denton Stewart, 67, of Glen Alpine, went to be with her heavenly Father Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Stewart was born Feb. 17, 1952, in Burke County, a daughter of the late Paul Iverson and Lillie Mae Maloney Denton. She was a homemaker who loved her family and enjoyed life. She graduated from Valdese High School with honors in 1970. While her children were attending school, she went back to get her associate degree at Western Piedmont Community College and received her Bachelor of Arts from Lenoir-Rhyne College. She was a retired school teacher from Table Rock Middle School, with the Burke County Public School System, and a 2003 finalist of Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted from the North Carolina Association of the Gifted and Talented. She had a passion for teaching and loved her students. She married her love, March 20, 1970. She was of the Apostolic Faith. Loretta's family would like to express their appreciation for the care and attention that Loretta received from Burke County EMS, Grace Hospital doctors, the fifth floor nursing staff and Burke Hospice and Palliative Care.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerry, Floyd "Red," Paul Jr., and a number of aunts and uncles. She is survived by her husband, Donald "Sonny" Stewart of the home; daughter, Stephanie White (Jerry) of Drexel; son, Christopher Stewart (Beth) of Morganton; and grandchildren, Brittany Stewart, Christopher J. Stewart, Joshua Stewart, Brandon Lewis and Sarah White. Also surviving are her brother, Percy Denton (Pauline) of Murrels Inlet, S.C.; and sisters, Virginia Thompson (Donald) of Morganton, Connie Crew (Donald) of Nebo; and a number of nieces and nephews who were dear to her.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 4, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, with the Revs. Kevin Crawford and George Crawford officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m.
