McDowell County Post 56 baseball player Justin Dula has performed well so far in the 2019 Junior Legion campaign.

However, on Thursday night, the rising senior put together his best effort of the season to lead McDowell’s ‘A’ team to a 12-2 win in five innings at Hendersonville.

Dula so far in eight games is batting .435 and on Thursday night he did a good job padding those stats as the first baseman hit a pair of home runs and drove in six runs in four plate appearances. Dula, after Thursday’s outing, has 10 hits in 23 at bats and has driven in 14 runs.

Dula’s two-run shot in the second gave Post 56 a 6-2 lead and then another two-run bomb with two outs in the fifth gave McDowell a 12-2 lead and put the team in a position to force the 10-run rule after retiring Hendersonville in the bottom of the fifth.

McDowell finished with a dozen hits, with leadoff hitter Chapel Matson also having three hits in the game, one of those hits a double. Ethan Hamm (RBI) added two hits and Ben Barnes, Three Young (double, RBI), Travis Bailey (double, RBI) and Ethan Davis added one hit apiece.

Dula, along with rising sophomore Dusty Revis, combined for five innings of work on the bump, allowing two earned runs on four hits and six strikeouts.

The Post 56 pitching staff has done a good job overall after eight games. The unit has a combined earned run average of 1.85, striking out 53 batters and walking just 10 in 49 innings of play.

McDowell Post 56 will continue its current road swing Monday at Rutherford County Post 423 and Tuesday at Caldwell County Post 29.
