It was a rough night at the plate for the McDowell Lady Titans in Wednesday’s regular-season finale at North Buncombe High School as they managed just three hits in a 6-1 loss to the Lady Blackhawks.
North Buncombe pitchers Caitlin Griffin and Karlyn Pickens combined for the three-hitter, striking out 13 McDowell batters. That left the Lady Titans with very few chances to manufacture any runs.
Meanwhile the Lady Hawks accumulated 11 hits off McDowell pitching. With the score 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, North Buncombe pushed across four runs to put the game out of reach.
The Lady Titans did prevent the shutout by scoring one in the seventh. Candace Cooper walked to begin the frame and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
A two-out single to center by Alexa Poplin spoiled the shutout, scoring Cooper.
Dezi Williams and Emma Banks also had one hit each to account for the team to offensively.
A busy week of softball action at Titan Field will begin on Tuesday as the third-seeded Lady Titans (10-10) will host sixth seed West Caldwell in the first round of the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference softball tournament.
McDowell High will also be site of the tournament semifinals and championship game next Wednesday and Friday.
