We are only two weeks away from the start of the 2019 regular season, and if you are a fan of McDowell Titan football, tomorrow (Saturday) is a golden opportunity to see the team hard at work and get to know the players.
McDowell Football and the McDowell High Athletic Booster Club will be holding the first annual “Meet the Titans” open house at Titan Stadium on Saturday morning. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. and the event is free to the general public.
Highlights will include a live look at a varsity and junior varsity practice, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday’s practice will be the team’s eighth of the preseason and will feature some full-contact action to go along with individual drill work and calisthenics.
For the public, this will serve as a 2019 first look at the program under first-year head coach Darrell Brewer. He was hired in June, replacing Andy Morgan, who resigned after a three-year tenure to take an assistant coaching position at A.C. Reynolds High School.
Under Brewer, the system will have a radically different look, converting over from a spread offense to a more run-based wing-T offense in 2019.
While all the action is going on between the lines, the booster club will be on site providing music and operating concessions during the event. The booster club will have a face painting booth set up, as well as a table selling school merchandise. They will also be selling football season ticket and parking passes, giving fans an opportunity to get a head start on admission and premium parking for all 2019 home games at a reduced rate. Boosters will also be available to accept any corporate sponsorships for the 2019-20 school year.
The event will conclude with a punt, pass and kick competition for any interested youth after the high school team’s practice concludes.
The “Meet the Titans” event serves as a kickoff for the community to come out and support the program leading up to the season opener on Aug. 23 at R-S Central.
Tomorrow’s event will also kick off a busy week, with two other preseason scrimmages on the slate. McDowell will host West Caldwell on Tuesday (Aug. 13) at 10 a.m. in a controlled scrimmage, and then, two days later, McDowell will travel up Old Fort Mountain Thursday to scrimmage the Owen Warhorses in a 6 p.m. scrimmage.
Both days next week will feature full-contact action for both the varsity and jayvees. Tuesday’s home scrimmage will have a more controlled practice format but on Thursday the teams will play in more game-like situations.
After the season opener in Rutherfordton, McDowell will open its home schedule on Aug. 30 against East Burke.
