The struggles continued for the McDowell Titans golf team as no one broke 100 at Monday’s match at Catawba Springs.
The Titans shot 434 to finish in last place among the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference teams. West Caldwell, who is already pulling away from the pack, shot 319 to place first. The Warriors were followed by Hickory (348), Alexander Central (359), South Caldwell (368), St. Stephens (370), Watauga (390), Freedom (392) and McDowell.
West Caldwell’s Lexton Ford shot a 2-over-par 74 to claim medalist honors. His teammate, Matthew Gurnsey, was second with a 77. Hickory’s Eli Wyatt, Freedom’s Jared Clontz and Alexander Central’s Cole Carrigan each shot 78.
Evan Grigsby and Noah Duncan each shot 107 to pace the Titans. R.J. Stanley carded a 109. Jordan Johnson (111) and Matthew Johnson (113) also played for McDowell.
With three matches played, West Caldwell has a whopping 70-shot lead on second-place Alexander Central.
