The McDowell Titans and Lady Titans will have to wait until after the holidays for their chances to get some payback against the Mitchell Mountaineers.
McDowell’s home games with Mitchell were postponed Friday due to winter weather in the forecast for our neighbors at the top of Coxes Creek.
The games have been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 9, and will begin at 4 p.m. with the jayvee girls contest tipping off the action. Mitchell’s varsity teams swept MHS in Bakersville back on Dec. 7.
It was an especially rare win for Mitchell in the boys’ game. McDowell had won 18 straight against the Mountaineers and hadn’t lost to Mitchell since the 1999-2000 season opener.
As it is, both the Titans and Lady Titans will see their next action in the Freedom Christmas Invitational beginning the day after Christmas. The Lady Titans will take on Erwin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26. The Titans will play Draughn at 2:30 the same day. All games will be played at Freedom.
With a win over Erwin, the Lady Titans (4-2) would advance to the semifinals on Thursday at 4 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s other quarterfinal between East Burke and R-S Central. A loss would land McDowell in the 10 a.m. game on Thursday. The finals are set for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28.
The Lady Titans are coming off a hard-fought, 52-47 win over R-S Central last Tuesday.
If the Titans (4-2) beat Draughn in the opener, they would advance to the semifinals Thursday at 5:30 against the winner of Wednesday’s other quarterfinal between R-S Central and Asheville Christian Academy. A loss would put the Titans in the 1 p.m. game Thursday in the consolation bracket. The finals are set for 8:30 Friday, Dec. 28.
The Titans suffered a heart-breaking, 72-69 loss to R-S Central last Tuesday. McDowell nearly erased a 14-point, second-half deficit, but couldn’t get over the hump.
