McDowell County American Legion Post 56 earned a two-game sweep of the East Rutherford Junior Legion team on Tuesday evening at Titan field.
McDowell ‘A’ 8, East Rutherford 2
In the nightcap, Post 56’s A-team kept its perfect record intact, beating East Rutherford 8-2 in a standard seven-inning game.
McDowell continued to sustain its offensive attack as the Sixers scored in all innings except for the first. East Rutherford took a 1-0 lead after one frame but then Post 56 tied it up in the second and added two runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Justin Dula singled to begin the second. He then was sacrificed to second by Ethan Davis. Justin Davis then singled to right, putting runners on the corners, and, on the play, Dula scored on a throwing error by East Rutherford’s right fielder, tying the game 1-1.
Ethan Hamm in the third hit a two-run homer to right making it 3-1 and in the fourth an RBI double by Ben Barnes made it 4-1. Barnes scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.
The four-run margin was enough for McDowell pitcher Chapel Matson, who picked up the complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits. Matson struck out four and walked three.
Post 56 had eight hits in the finale with Dusty Revis and Justin Davis leading the way with two hits each. Hamm, Barnes, Three Young (RBI) and Dula had one hits apiece.
McDowell ‘B’ 4, East Rutherford 3
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Post 56 B-team squeezed out a 4-3 win against the Cavaliers.
Post 56 took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. East Rutherford then chipped into the margin with a single run in the top of the second and two more in the top of the fourth to even the score.
McDowell in the bottom of the fourth pushed across the winning run. Kaden Elkins tripled to left field to begin the frame. Hunter Sills then sacrificed in Elkins to give Post 56 the decisive one-run lead. East Rutherford did get a run into scoring position in the fifth but stranded the runner at second to end the game.
McDowell had just four hits as a team but made every one of them count. Michael Lewis went 2-for-2 including a triple and drove in a pair of runs. Noah Higgins also had one hit in the game.
Ty Smith went three innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Ethan Hensley and Logan Duncan combined for two scoreless innings of relief, striking out a combined four batters.
Post 56 B improved to 6-1 with Tuesday’s victory.
McDowell and East Rutherford will battle in a rematch tonight at East Rutherford High School (6 p.m. start).
