In softball action, the West McDowell Middle School Lady Spartans survived 11-8 against the cross-town rival East McDowell Lady Trojans in a game that featured plenty of wild momentum swings Tuesday at McDowell High.
East McDowell jumped in front with two runs in the first inning. Maris Suttles and Emily Crisp both singled and then were driven in by a triple from Lily Williams. West then countered with two runs in the second and third and then three more in the fourth to take a 7-2 advantage.
The Lady Trojans battled back in the fifth, scoring three times to get back within a two-run deficit. The big hit of the inning was a three-run double by Dakota Melancon.
Both teams continued to go back-and-forth, but the Lady Spartans countered with three runs in the sixth which ultimately led to the victory.
Carley Arrowood finished 2-for-3, driving in two runs for West McDowell. Hannah Killough also drove in a pair and Brooklyn Thompson also had one hit and two RBIs.
East McDowell finished with 10 hits. Crisp accounted for three of them and drove in five runs. Kyleigh Shipley and Elissa Carter added two hits each. Peyton McPeters had one hit in four at bats.
The two clubs square off again this Thursday in the regular-season finale.
