BAKERSVILLE – The McDowell Lady Titans junior varsity basketball team earned its second win of the week Thursday afternoon, beating the Mitchell Lady Mountaineers 64-30.

A total of 12 McDowell players scored in the victory.

Sophomore forward Makenna Parkins recorded a game-high 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Payton Koone added 10 points off the bench. Koone made three long-range baskets in a first-half flurry.

The rest of the scoring was more evenly distributed. Leila Bragg scored seven points and had a pair of assists. Tayla Wood (5 rebounds) and Alana Stephenson netted six points each.

Daisy Rice chipped in five points off the bench. Makiya Burgess, Katie Baker, Madi Smith, Naliyah Boyce and Shelby Edwards finished with two points apiece.

McDowell’s junior varsity boys did not face off with Mitchell on Thursday due to the Mountaineers’ continued run in the high school football playoffs.

Junior varsity action will resume on Tuesday as the Titans will be on the road at R-S Central (4:30 start, jayvee boys only).
