McDowell Lady Titans sophomore thrower Cierra Flack will compete in this Saturday’s State 4A Championship track meet at North Carolina A&T University after placing third in the shot put at last weekend’s West Regional.
Flack’s throw of 36 feet, 11.25 inches landed her in third place behind regional champ Sydney Hunter of Mallard Creek (38-10.5) and runner-up S’Khaja Charles of Vance (37-4). The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state championships.
Lady Titan juniors Summer Bartlett and Autumn Bartlett also fared well at the regional, but just missed out on qualifying for states. Summer finished sixth with a throw of 34-2, while Autumn placed seventh with a 33-9.5. Flack and the Bartlett sisters were the only MHS athletes to qualify for the regional.
Flack’s distance placed her solidly in the middle of the pack among state qualifiers; it ranks eighth in the 16-athlete field at the championships. The best regional performance belonged to Ragsdale’s Kaitlin McGoogan, who threw 40-11.5.
The McDowell sophomore placed second in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championships earlier in the month, but exceeded that effort by more than three feet in the regional.
