The McDowell Lady Titans made quick work of the Hickory Lady Red Tornadoes Monday night, running away with a 15-0 shutout in three innings.
A two-run first inning followed by eight more runs in the second turned the game into a runaway in quick fashion. And then, after a five-run third, McDowell was able to kick in the mercy rule for its shortest official game of the season.
The Lady Titans in the hits column matched what they did in terms of runs scored, putting up 15 hits.
Dezi Williams went 3-for-3, scored three times and drove in one run. Two of the three hits for Williams were for extra bases. As a team, seven of McDowell’s 15 hits also were for extra bases.
Jaden Shuford (2RBIs), Emma Banks and Callie Spratt (RBI) had two hits apiece in the game. Jada Cannon (double, RBI), Candace Cooper (2RBIs), Madison Wills (RBI), Taylor Morgan (2RBIs), Laynie Hudgins (2RBIs) and Jessica Cannon added one hit apiece for McDowell.
To go along with the well-distributed offensive attack was a combined no-hit shutout over three innings by Morgan and senior pitcher Kirsten Melvin, who struck out a combined five batters.
McDowell (9-9 overall, 8-5 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) with the victory gets back to the .500 mark on the season and in league play, assures itself of a third-place finish in the standings, and subsequently, a State 4A Playoff berth.
The Lady Titans have just two scheduled games left starting Wednesday at Freedom (5 p.m. start).
