The current winning streak for the McDowell Lady Titans volleyball team extended to four matches after picking up a 3-1 at Titan Gym against Avery County on Wednesday night.
While the score on paper seemed to indicate that McDowell (7-4) had an easy time against their High Country neighbor, three of the four games were very close and the entire match included several long scoring rallies.
Up 11-9 in the first, McDowell pulled away, scoring nine of the next 11 points scored to win 25-17. Jada Cannon (16 digs, 6 kills, 4 aces) finished off the first game with a spike at the net.
Avery squeezed out its lone win of the match winning the second set 27-25 and was up 20-19 in the third, but the Lady Titans picked up the intensity, scoring the last five points of the third (25-20) to go up 2-1 in the match.
With the advantage, McDowell came out strong in the fourth game, winning six of the first seven points of the game, and pulled away 25-13 to win the match.
Makenna Parkins (15 digs, 11 assists) finished with a team-high 12 kills and outside hitter Jessica Cannon recorded 10 kills, nine digs and a pair of assists.
Eavan Smith (4 digs) finished with seven kills and middle hitter Zoe Vance (5 blocks) tallied five kills. Sophomore Emily Register had one kill up the middle as well.
The magnitude of long scoring rallies was most apparent on the defensive side. Kirsten Melvin had a busy night at the libero position, recording a season-high 34 digs in the match. Nicole Gallion added 15 digs from the back line and Laynie Hudgins (9 assists, 4 aces) finished with eight digs.
McDowell battled Freedom Thursday evening in a Northwestern Conference tilt at home, but results were not available at press time.
