Mack Brown

Coach Mack Brown of Texas argues with an official during their game against Oklahoma Oct. 13, 2012.

According to a report from Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes, Mack Brown will return to lead the North Carolina football program again.

Brown, 67, last coached at Texas where he helped rebuild the Longhorns program, winning a national championship in 2005 and playing for another in 2009. His teams went 158-48 over 16 seasons at Texas with 15 bowl appearances.

He took over at Texas after a successful run at Carolina that saw the Tar Heels rise to the top five in the national polls during his final season in 1997, the end of a long, steady build that began with back-to-back 1-10 seasons in 1988 and 1989.

Brown led the Tar Heels to six straight bowl games and achieved 10-win seasons three times in Chapel Hill.

Since stepping down at Texas in 2013, Brown has done television work for ESPN and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this year.
