Just call them the “Quad Squad.”

The McDowell Titan wrestling swept its home quad match Tuesday, beating North Buncombe, Avery and East Burke to improve to 11-1 in duals. It was the Titans’ third sweep in four quads this season.

McDowell’s victories got more lopsided as the evening wore on. The Titans beat North Buncombe 48-25, Avery 66-12 and East Burke 78-3.

“The guys came ready to wrestle,” said Titans head coach Tim Hutchins. “We talk a lot about looking for pins, because that’s the way you score points, and they’ve done a good job at that. These were good wins.”

Five Titans, Channing Watson (145 pounds), Jacob Phillips (152), Aaron Buchanan (170), Donte Quitman (132) and Toney McGee (126) had perfect 3-0 nights, and everyone else in the lineup went 2-1.

Two highlights stood out for McDowell.

McGee scored a hard-fought 5-1 win over Avery’s River Griffith in a battle between two state runners-up from last season. The Titans’ unbeaten 126-pounder overcame an early leg cramp against the aggressive Griffith, and later took control of the match.

Buchanan and East Burke’s Elijah Bradshaw, a two-time state qualifier, wrestled a wildly entertaining bout before Buchanan scored a third-period pin.

Watson was the only McDowell wrestler to record three pins in the quad, and Phillips added two pins en route to a 3-0 evening. Connor Good (2-1, 160) also had two pins.

Preston Dennison (138), Josh Morgan (182), Aamon Haynes (195), Joe Hullette (220), Aaron Duncan (285), Calvin Stevenson (106), Toby Finn (113) and Alldyn Conley (120) were 2-1.

McDowell is at East Henderson for another quad this Friday (5 p.m.).
