McDowell High’s two junior varsity basketball teams opened the 2017-18 season Tuesday afternoon with a split of contests against East Burke.
In junior varsity girls action, the McDowell Lady Titans dominated from the opening tip and routed the Lady Cavaliers 54-10 at Titan Gymnasium.
A total of 12 McDowell players scored in the contest. The team jumped out to a 21-2 margin after one quarter and was never challenged the whole way.
Freshman Katie Baker and sophomore Makenna Parkins (9 rebounds, 5 assists) led the way with nine points each.
Alana Stephenson (3 assists) added seven points. Naliyah Boyce (4 rebounds) chipped in five points. Mariah Hunt, Clementine Miller, Shelby Edwards and Daisy Rice added four points apiece. Leila Bragg, Tayla Wood and Madi Smith finished with two points apiece.
East Burke, 58, McDowell 49 (jayvee boys)
It was a rough shooting night for the McDowell Titans junior varsity basketball team in its opener, losing to East Burke 58-49.
The Cavaliers led wire-to-wire in the contest and had leads as high as 13 points on a couple occasions. Sophomore wing Qualique Garner (6 rebounds, 4 assists) scored 22 points in a losing effort. Unfortunately, the sophomore was the lone Titan in double figures in the contest.
Jalen Robbins (4 rebounds) added seven points. Johnathan Ramirez (9 rebounds) netted six points in a losing effort. Freshmen Colby Effler (3 assists), Trent Lewis and Gavin Davis had three points apiece.
Richard Handy (5 rebounds) finished with two points and Tyler Rector along with Dequan Boyce scored one point each.
